Seven Day Road Trip—Arugum Bay to Polonnaruwa (Day Three)

even Day Road Trip—Arugum Bay to Polonnaruwa (Day Three)

Day three started out with a drive up the East Coast highway to Kalkudah Bay Beach/Passekudah Beach.

We saw the reconstruction of the areas where the 2004 Tsunami had devastated.  The villages and road showed various states of repair. I understand each municipality participates in its own reconstruction priorities and processes.  The palm fringed beaches attract van loads of local day trippers.  Children and men are swimming while the women watch.  A few women dressed in sarongs as a bathing costume enter the water with their families.    Tourism boomed here in the 80’s, but the 90’s civil war resulted in bombed out hotels, followed by the 2004 tsunami.  An army camp now is the main infrastructure on the beach.

From Kalkudah Bay we headed to Polonnaruwa and stayed the night in the Hotel The Village twelve kilometers away in the sleepy village of Giritale.
