Bishnupur Temple

Bishnupur Temple

I am back in Kolkata after a five hour jeep ride from Gangtok to Siliguri and then the overnight train to Kolkata.  All uneventful!  I am back at the Broadway Hotel and since I have 2 more weeks until the conference I am looking at the guide book for interesting places to go. This morning I took the 6am train to Bishnupur which has the most amazing terra cotta temples from the 16 century AD.   The detail in the reliefs is divine.  I found a very nice hotel next to the Lonely Planet recommended place for half the price and it has BBC and hot water…all for 35o rupees.  I also got a ticket to Kolkata for Friday morning so will be back mid afternoon to the Broadway hotel.  Two more days in Kolkata and then I booked a 2 night and 3 day trip to the Sunderlands…maybe I will see a Bengal Tiger. This is the mangrove sanctuary where the Bengals live.  The trip is on a boat from Kolkata…all inclusive…but I will have to bring my own brandy as I am certain alcohol  will be hard to find.  And I also need to book a ticket to Bhubanaswar, which I will do tomorrow at the train station when I return to Kolkata.

So life is good. I found a nice place for dinner which serves beer, so things are just working out.
