Aswan–Oct 7

Aswan–Oct 7

I have arrived in Awan and am staying at the Keylany Hotel after an uneventful 13 hour train ride from Cairo in first class A/C.  My room has A/C as well.  These will be my last luxuries until I get to Atbara in 10 – 14 days.

Monday will be an exciting day as well as a bit intimidating.  I have a ticket for the noon ferry and it has been suggested I get to the Aswan High Dam by around 9am in order to get a good space on the ferry since it is open seating  (benches and floor).  I have stocked up on provisions as the ferry ride is 18 – 24 hours long and one meal is included with the fare.

I have read about what to expect but am not certain any amount of reading can prepare one for this long crowded ferry ride–especially the last ferry before the end of Ramadan oon Oct 12 or 13 where everything shuts down for 3 days.

The frist night I will spend in Wadi Halfa.  The Dradt guide says thier are four hotels–simple mud brick structures will sandy floors and rope beds. The accommodation is all dorm style.  Wednesday mornign I will head to Abri oand on ThursdayI plan to head to Kerma or Dongola to wait of the El Ed Fetr holiday.

The next email from me will be from Dongola in about 10 days depending on transportation and holidays.
